Early this morning, NATO forces struck an antenna radar system, which was being solely used for military purposes at Tripoli’s main airport. The antenna, which was previously used for civilian air traffic control, was being used by pro-Qadhafi forces to track NATO air assets in the airspace over Tripoli and to coordinate their own air defence early warning system.
This information was provided to the pro-Qadhafi forces with the intent of coordinating their tactical operations against NATO air assets and Libyan civilians.
Since the implementation of the No-Fly Zone by NATO forces under UNSCR 1970, NATO has maintained control over Libyan airspace. NATO continues to control Libyan airspace in order to ensure the safe entrance of all legitimate humanitarian or diplomatic flights entering Libya.
