NASA ANNOUNCES STS-134 WAKEUP SONG WINNERS; FACE IN SPACE TOTALS

HOUSTON -- NASA announced the winners of its "Original Song Contest" after six weeks of public voting The songs will awaken the STS-134 astronauts aboard space shuttle Endeavour during their ongoing mission

"Sunrise Number 1" by Jorge Otero and the band Stormy Mondays from Oviedo, Spain, earned first place Shuttle Commander Mark Kelly, Pilot Greg H Johnson, Mission Specialists Mike Fincke, Drew Feustel, Greg Chamitoff and Roberto Vittori of the European Space Agency will hear the song at 5:56 p m EDT on May 31 - the day before the crew returns to Earth "Sunrise Number 1" received 787,725 votes, or 49 8 percent of the total ballots

"Dreams You Give" by Brian Plunkett from Halfway, Mo , earned second place with 612,959 votes, or 38 8 percent It will wake the crew at 6:56 p m on May 30

The Original Song Contest received 1,350 entries for consideration, and NASA selected 10 songs as finalists The public cast 1,581,531 votes for their favorite song from March 29 through May 16 To listen to the songs and see the all the results, visit:

NASA also released the final tally of submissions to the Space Shuttle Program's "Face in Space" campaign for the STS-134 mission Participants submitted 128,940 photos for uplink to Endeavour via the Mission Control Center at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston The images will return to Earth through a data transmission, andcontributors will be able to print certificates verifying their photos flew aboard Endeavour

More than 7,550 other photos already have been submitted to fly aboard the last shuttle mission targeted to launch July 8 Submissions will be accepted through the liftoff date To take part in the STS-135 Face in Space campaign, visit:

HOUSTON � Endeavour astronauts said goodbye to half of their International Space Station colleagues Monday afternoon as the Expedition 27 crew members prepared to return to Earth

Commander Dmitry Kondratyev and Flight Engineers Paolo Nespoli and Cady Coleman said their farewells to station crewmates and closed the hatch of their Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft at 1:45 p m That was about two hours after Endeavour astronauts� sleep period had begun Undocking is set for 4:35 p m

The Soyuz was to pause at a distance of about 200 yards, allowing Nespoli to gather imagery of the station and Endeavour, before moving away from the area Landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan is scheduled for 9:26 p m

Endeavour crew members had most of the day off after the demanding and successful activities of their mission to this point

Commander Mark Kelly and Mission Specialist Mike Fincke answered questions Sunday night from youngsters among about 400 kindergarten to fifth-grade students at Mesa Verde Elementary School in Tucson, Ariz

Later in their day, members of Endeavour�s crew had a privatized conversation with spacewalk experts at the Mission Control Center The chat was a review of activities of the mission�s second spacewalk on Sunday Spacewalkers Andrew Feustel and Mike Fincke, intravehicular officer Greg Chamitoff and Kelly participated from Endeavour

At about 8:30 a m , Mission Specialist Roberto Vittori and fellow Italian Nespoli talked with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Rome

HOUSTON � The combined Endeavour and International Space Station crew is now down to nine following the first Soyuz departure in history while a space shuttle was docked to the station

Following the 4:35 p m CDT departure, a similarly unprecedented photo session from the Soyuz documented the 1 million pound complex while shuttle remained docked, and the station was commanded to slowly rotate for the photographer

With former station commander Dmitry Kondratyev manually controlling the spacecraft, European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli climbed into its habitation module and documented the view of the station and shuttle from a distance of about 600 feet NASA astronaut Cady Coleman also is returning home on the Soyuz, which is scheduled to land in Kazakhstan at 9:26 p m

The Expedition 27 crew members departed about two hours after the Endeavour astronauts� sleep period had begun Endeavour�s crew had most of the day off

The Endeavour crew, and now Expedition 28 flight engineer Ron Garan, were awakened at 7:26 p m to the song �Svegliarsi La Mattina (Woke Up This Morning)� by the Italian duo Zero Assoluto, uplinked especially for Mission Specialist Roberto Vittori of Italy

STS-134 commander Mark Kelly, Pilot Greg Johnson, and Mission Specialists Andrew Feustel and Mike Fincke and Greg Chamitoff will lend their hands to space station tasks, installing a new filter inside the Oxygen Generation System to provide continuous carbon dioxide scrubbing whenever the oxygen system�s recirculation loop is running

Spacewalkers Fincke and Feustel will review procedures for Wednesday�s third spacewalk of the mission, along with intravehicular choreographer Chamitoff and the rest of the team Fincke and Feustel will get ready for the first use of the In-Suit Light Exercise Two interviews also are scheduled, the first with San Francisco and Sacramento reporters, and the second with Pittsburgh and Houston reporters

The next status report will be issued after crew sleep periods begins around 10:26 a m Wednesday, or earlier if warranted
