NASA ASTRONAUT TO VISIT WITH HEBER SPRINGS STUDENTS

HOUSTON � NASA astronaut Janet Kavandi will speak at Heber Springs High School on April 27 to acquaint students with NASA and encourage them to seek careers in math and science

Kavandi will hold a question and answer session with students in grades 9-12 who have already expressed interest in pursuing careers in math and science The discussion starts at 8:30 a m CDT in Room 107 of Heber Springs High School, 1100 West Pine St , Heber Springs, Ark

At 10 a m , Kavandi will address the entire student body by giving a multimedia presentation of her spaceflight missions The presentation will be held in the school gymnasium and will be followed by a brief question and answer session Media are invited to attend

Kavandi is the director of Flight Crew Operations at NASA�s Johnson Space Center in Houston The three-time spaceflight veteran has logged more than 33 days in space, traveling more than 13 1 million miles in 535 Earth orbits

Kavandi was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in December 1994 She served as a mission specialist on the STS-91, STS-99 and STS-104 space shuttle missions

In her current position, Kavandi is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the directorate, including the astronaut corps and aircraft operations at Ellington Field

ASTRONAUT TO CELEBRATE SPACE DAY WITH NORTH CAROLINA STUDENTS

HOUSTON -- NASA astronaut Lee Morin will participate in Space Day with students at Betty Dixon Elementary School in Holly Ridge, N C , on Friday, April 27

Space Day activities begin with a hot air balloon launch on campus at 8:30 a m EDT Throughout the day, students will participate in several hands-on science activities including simulated lunar landings and rocket launches The school is located at 130 Betty Dixon Road adjacent to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune The event is open to the media

Morin, who flew aboard space shuttle Atlantis in 2002, will speak at an assembly in the gymnasium from 10 to 11 a m He will share his experiences as an astronaut and video of his space shuttle mission to the International Space Station Morin also will discuss NASA careers and the opportunities available to students who pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies

As a member of the STS-110 crew, Morin logged more than 259 hours in space He performed two spacewalks totaling 14 hours and nine minutes He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematical/electrical science from the University of New Hampshire, a Master of Science in biochemistry from New York University, a doctorate of medicine and microbiology from New York University in 1981 and 1982, respectively, and a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1988
