NASA ASTRONAUT TO TALK TO FLORIDA STUDENTS IN CYBERSPACE
HOUSTON - NASA astronaut Andrew Drew Feustel will talk with students in cyberspace as part of the Florida Summer Youth Program on Friday, June 22
Feustel will take part in two live streaming video appearances with students at the Holmes County Public Library (HCPL) at 303 N Etheridge St , Bonifay, Fla The first session begins at 11:30 a m EDT followed by a second session at 2:30 p m Media interested in attending either appearance should contact Susan Harris, Director, HCPL, 850-547-3573
Speaking from NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston, Feustel hopes to inspire Florida youths to reach for the stars during the librarys Dream Big events The question-and-answer format will include information from his two space shuttle missions
Feustel was selected by NASA in July 2000 In 2009, he served on the crew of STS-125, the final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope In 2011, he launched aboard space shuttle Endeavours final mission, STS-134, to the International Space Station He has logged more than 28 days in space including 42 hours and 18 minutes during six spacewalks
The Florida Summer Youth Program is an annual collaboration between the State Library and Archives of Florida and public libraries around the state which provide information, resources and activities for youths during their summer break

LOCAL STUDENTS HELP RENAME NASA RADIATION MONITORING PROJECTS
HOUSTON -- Students from Clear Creek Independent School District now have a hand in helping NASA advance radiation protection in space NASAs RadWorks team developing two Radiation Environment Monitors (REMs) for space vehicles has selected names devised by high school students for the monitors as part of a contest for local science students
Battery-Operated Independent Radiation Detector, or BIRD, was chosen as the name for the REM concept under development for NASAs Exploration Flight Test-1 The test in early 2014 will launch NASA's Orion spacecraft, without a crew, to an altitude that has not been achieved by a craft intended for human flight since the Apollo lunar landing missions The BIRD acronym was created by pre-Advanced Placement physics students in Scott Blacks class at Clear Falls High School
Hybrid Electronic Radiation Assessor, or HERA, will designate the REM concept for NASAs Advanced Exploration Systems program which pioneers new approaches for rapidly developing prototype systems, demonstrating key capabilities and validating operational concepts for future human missions beyond Earths orbit The name HERA was devised by teacher Kristi Roofs students in chemistry and pre-Advanced Placement chemistry classes at Clear Lake High School
The RadWorks team developed the idea of a naming competition for students in the local school district to help differentiate between the two projects and to excite future scientists about space
Differentiating between the original nomenclature for the two REM concepts quickly became confusing for the RadWorks team, so we thought tapping into the creativity of local science students would yield some imaginative names and give future scientists and engineers a chance to play a part in developing new space technologies, said Bobbie Swan, RadWorks Project Manager We were really impressed with the innovative quality of the submissions
The harmful effects of radiation in space pose dangers to astronauts RadWorks is a NASA project to advance radiation protection, measurement and warning systems REM is one element of RadWorks The monitor is a robust, radiation-hardened readout chip combined with a silicon sensor to form a highly capable space radiation measurement system The goal of the RadWorks project is to integrate REM into a space vehicle using the vehicles power, data collection system and display systems

HOUSTON -- NASA astronauts Kenneth Ham and Nicholas Patrick have left the space agency Their last day was May 31 Ham is a veteran of two spaceflights, where he served as the pilot of STS-124 in 2008 and commander of STS-132 in 2010 Patrick served as a mission specialist on STS-116 in 2006 and STS-130 in 2010
"It has been a pleasure to work with Ken during his tenure here at JSC," said Peggy Whitson, chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston "He is an incredibly accomplished aviator and with a great sense of humor We wish him the best in this new phase of his career "
Ham, a Navy captain, holds a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the U S Naval Postgraduate School He joined NASA in 1998 Before flying in space, he served in multiple technical roles including work as a space shuttle capsule communicator (CAPCOM) Hams most recent NASA assignment included duties as an instructor pilot in the T-38N and WB-57F research pilot
Ham is a pilot with more than 6,000 flight hours and experience in more than 40 different aircraft A 1987 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Ham will return to the institution as an instructor
Patrick is a veteran of three spacewalks He played a vital role in installation of the Tranquility module and Cupola of the International Space Station He ends his NASA career with more than 26 days of spaceflight experience
"Nick is an extremely talented individual," said Whitson, "his engineering skills and expertise were a valuable contribution to our team, not only during his flights but in his work with future exploration programs as well I am sure that his future contributions will be just as valuable "
