Application Deadline Approaches for NASA STEM Program for High School Girls

NASA is accepting applications until noon CST Monday, Feb 3, for its 2014 Women in STEM High School (WISH) Aerospace Scholars program, in which high school junior girls can jump-start their future careers by exploring possibilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

Applicants must be female high school juniors who are U S citizens, have a cumulative grade point average of 3 25 or higher and show a proficiency in STEM subjects They must have access to the Internet and email, be able to commit to the entire 6-month duration of the project and participate in a summer experience at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston

The participants' online activities will be evaluated by a team of NASA education professionals, who will select approximately 30 students to participate in the on-site summer experience Finalists will be notified by June 2014

WISH participants will chart a course for human exploration of space and engage with NASA female role models They also will interact with scientists and engineers who will share their own education and career paths and help mentor the participants The WISH project consists of online modules beginning in February, in which students will complete activities in order to qualify for the activities Aug 3-8 at Johnson, where they will design a mock human mission to Mars

NASA's Office of Education sponsors WISH Aerospace Scholars and offers it free of charge to the participants Questions about WISH may be directed to JSC-NHAS@mail nasa gov

International Fitness Challenge Comes to Ed White Elementary

NASA will kick off �Mission X 2014: Train Like an Astronaut International Fitness Challenge� Tuesday, Jan 28, at Ed White Elementary, 1708 Les Talley Drive in El Lago, Texas

Experts from NASA�s Johnson Space Center will hold a training session at the school, a USA team member of this year�s physical fitness challenge that involves participants from around the world The event will take place from 12:25-3 p m If activities are cancelled due to weather conditions, the event will take place at the same time Wednesday, Jan 29 Media interested in attending should contact the school at 281- 284-4300

Mission X and Train Like an Astronaut representatives from JSC, with leadership and support from Ed White physical education teachers Wendy Clough and April Fortenberry and principal Matthew Paulson, will help about 40 Ed White staff and about 460 students better understand the Train Like an Astronaut project and International Space Station activities

�Mission X helps our students not only to desire physical fitness like an Astronaut, Mission X connects physical fitness to academic success,� said Paulson �It opens our students' visual horizons to a greater understanding that they are important participants, who have a real role, in a global world As a STEM school we value those connections �

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in four Train Like an Astronaut activities including Mission Control, Agility Astro Course, Crew Assembly and Building an Astro Core While participants perform each activity they also will learn about its space relevance

This is the fourth year of the Mission X: Train Like an Astronaut International Fitness Challenge This year the challenge includes about 18,000 participants from 24 countries who engage in physical fitness activities as well as science activities that address living a healthy lifestyle

NASA�s Johnson Space Center to Close for Winter Weather

HOUSTON � NASA's Johnson Space Center will be closed Tuesday due to the expected conditions caused by the winter storm Center leadership will continue to monitor the situation to determine the reopening time on Wednesday

The closing allows JSC employees to avoid treacherous road conditions Temperatures in the area are predicted to be below freezing on Tuesday, and roadways are expected to be icy

Flight control of the International Space Station will continue from Houston and the Space Station Mission Control Center at JSC will remain open during this period

Center employees should check with JSC Emergency Management website, www jscsos com, for up-to-date information on the status of the center Those without internet access can call 281-483-3351
