Abstract: Congressional Representative (New Jersey, 1999-2015) Rush Holt discusses the impact of Vannevar Bush’s
1945 report, Science, the Endless Frontier on post-WWII era research. In his introduction to the re-released edition (Princeton University Press, 2021), Holt detailed the necessity of government funded basic research and the benefits taxpayers could
expect because of that endeavor. Holt will also highlight how the seminal text presented an “inspirational utilitarian vision of what science can bring to people” and how the failure of that enterprise could impact American citizens today.
Rush Holt is the former CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Congressional Representative
from New Jersey (1999-- 2015), physics professor and solar physics researcher at Swarthmore College and New York University.
