Description: Join Dr. Roger D. Launius, former NASA Chief Historian and former
Associate Director for Collections and Curatorial Affairs at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, as he discusses his recent book,
NACA to NASA to Now. This presentation will discuss the book, its stories, and its major findings of NASA and its predecessor organization, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Some of those issues include the nature of aerospace
research and development, major NACA/NASA programs, the social history of NACA/NASA, and the recent transformation of space activities since the beginning of the twenty-first century. The latter include the retirement of the Space Shuttle, International Space
Station operations, and rise of commercial providers for Earth-orbital activities that allows NASA to focus human efforts on cis-lunar, and trans-lunar space.
