HOUSTON � After a morning off, Discovery astronauts got back to work moving equipment and supplies to and from the International Space Station and preparing for Tuesday�s spacewalk, the third and last planned for their mission

Mission Specialists Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson configured their tools in the Quest airlock After a review of spacewalk procedures with other crew members, they will again spend the night in the airlock, its pressure reduced to 10 2 psi That campout is aimed at reducing the nitrogen in their blood to avoid decompression sickness

The spacewalk, replanned after difficulties bolting down an ammonia coolant tank on Sunday caused some rescheduling, is to begin at 2:11 a m CDT Tuesday and last 6� hours Activities include finishing the complicated change out of the large ammonia tank assembly, retrieving micrometeoroid shields from outside the airlock and retrieving a light-weight adapter plate assembly

After their free time, Discovery astronauts joined their station counterparts in transfer of equipment and supplies, much of it moving from the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo to the station That work was going well and was ahead of schedule

Shuttle and station crew members of both spacecraft took time out from work to field calls from the Earth below First, at 2:45 a m , Russian President Dmitry Medvedev spoke with the station crew, which includes Russian commander Oleg Kotov and two other cosmonauts, on his country�s Cosmonautics Day

Japanese astronauts, the shuttle�s Naoko Yamazaki and the station�s Soichi Noguchi, chatted at 5:41 a m with Japanese students, fellow astronaut Mamoru Mohri and Japanese dignitaries, including the minister of space policy, who had gathered in Tokyo And at 10:36 a m , shortly before their bed time, Discovery Commander Alan Poindexter, Pilot James P Dutton Jr and Mission Specialists Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger and Stephanie Wilson will talk with ABC World News� Diane Sawyer, MSNBC�s Contessa Brewer, Fox News Channel�s Jon Scott and KUSA-TV in Denver

NASA SETS NEWS CONFERENCE WITH SHUTTLE AND SPACE STATION CREWS

HOUSTON -- The 13 crew members aboard space shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station will hold a news conference at 6:26 a m CDT on Wednesday, April 14

U S reporters may ask questions in person from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and NASA Headquarters in Washington A portion of the news conference will be set aside for Russian and Japanese reporters

To participate in the news conference, U S journalists must call the public affairs office at one of the three participating NASA centers by 3 p m Tuesday Reporters must be in place at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the news conference

ORBITING SPACE SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS -- INCLUDING FORMER TEACHER -- CALL NORTH CAROLINA STUDENTS

WASHINGTON -- Astronauts orbiting 220 miles above Earth will speak with students in Gibsonville, N C , on Wednesday, April 14 The call with the students and space shuttle Commander Alan Poindexter and Mission Specialists Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson and Clay Anderson will take place at 1:06 p m EDT at Eastern Guilford High School in Gibsonville

Eastern Guilford High School is hosting students from Eastern Guilford Middle School, Gibsonville Elementary, McLeansville Elementary, Rankin Elementary and Sedalia Elementary for the downlink The school also will broadcast the event to the entire Guilford County Schools district, which serves more than 71,000 students

The astronauts launched Monday, April 5, aboard space shuttle Discovery from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida During the 13-day mission to the International Space Station, the crew will deliver science experiments and supplies; take three spacewalks to switch out a gyroscope on the station's truss, or backbone; install a spare ammonia storage tank and return a used one; and retrieve a Japanese experiment from the station's exterior

Metcalf-Lindenburger is one of three teachers selected to fly as shuttle mission specialists in the 2004 Educator Astronaut Class She operates the shuttle's robotic arm Without robotics, major accomplishments like building the station, repairing satellites in space and exploring other worlds would not be possible

Students have been preparing for the downlink by conducting NASA engineering design challenges and implementing agency robotics resources and activities into K-12 classrooms A science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, club was organized to increase participation and interest, particularly by female students

The school's guidance department also is collaborating with local universities to help students investigate and explore STEM opportunities beyond graduation During follow up in-district workshops in April and May, a NASA Aerospace Education Services Program specialist will demonstrate how to access and use NASA resources in K-12 curricula

Eastern Guilford High School employee Michael Woods, a former Aerospace Education Services Project specialist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md , and the agency's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va , is leading the downlink effort In December 2009, NASA awarded Guilford County Schools a two-year grant of nearly $1 million to help middle and high school teachers develop science lessons using the space agency's content

The event is part of a series with educational organizations in the U S and abroad to improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics The in-orbit call is part of Teaching From Space, a NASA project that uses the unique environment of human spaceflight to promote learning opportunities and build partnerships with the kindergarten through 12th grade education community

HOUSTON � Spacewalkers Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson will begin the third and final spacewalk of the mission, finishing the installation of a new ammonia tank for the International Space Station�s cooling systems and continuing transfers equipment and supplies

Mission Control played the song �Galileo� by the Indigo Girls as a wake-up for Mission Specialist Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger and the rest of the baker�s dozen crew -- Commander Alan Poindexter, Pilot James P Dutton Jr and Mission Specialists Stephanie Wilson, Naoko Yamazaki, Mastracchio and Anderson -- at 9:21 p m CDT

Mastracchio and Anderson spent the night in the Quest airlock, preparing their bodies for the lower pressure of the spacesuits, to protect against decompression sickness

Robotic arm operators Stephanie Wilson, Dutton and Soichi Noguchi will activate Canadarm2, the station�s arm, and grapple the old ammonia tank that was removed earlier in the mission and stored on the station�s Mobile Base System They�ll move the depleted tank into Discovery�s payload bay so that Mastracchio and Anderson can bolt it onto a logistics carrier for the ride home to Earth

The 6� -hour spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 2:11 a m CDT Tuesday, and has been replanned because of some difficulties bolting down the new ammonia tank on Sunday Mastracchio will wear a suit with red stripes around the legs and Anderson will wear an unmarked suit, and Metcalf-Lindenburger will coordinate the spacewalk from inside the complex

The first task will be to connect the fluid lines to the new ammonia tank This was not attempted during the second spacewalk because there wouldn�t have been enough time to let any ammonia that might have leaked sublimate into the vacuum of space They�ll then move on to secure the old tank in Discovery�s cargo bay

Additional tasks will include retrieval of micrometeoroid shields from outside the airlock and an experiment platform from the end of the Columbus laboratory The last planned task will be to try to tighten bolts on a radiator grapple fixture beam on the port-side radiator, which couldn�t be secured earlier If the bolts can�t be tightened, the spacewalkers will be asked to return it to the airlock for further troubleshooting

Transfer activities will resume inside the station With about three quarters of the science rack, equipment, food and supply moves complete, loadmaster Yamazaki and her team will work to get all the items into their final locations

Expedition 23 Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineers T J Creamer and Noguchi assisted with transfers and worked with experiments The newest members of Expedition 23, Flight Engineers Tracy Caldwell Dyson, Alexander Skvortsov and Mikhail Kornienko continued orienting themselves to their now home in space after docking just a few days before Discovery�s arrival and the start of the busy docked operations period
