RETURNED SPACE STATION ASTRONAUTS AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEWS
HOUSTON -- After a six-month stay aboard the International Space Station, astronauts Shannon Walker and Doug Wheelock will be available for live satellite interviews on Tuesday, Dec 14, from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston
Wheelock will be available from 5 to 6 a m CST Walker will be available from 6:10 to 7 a m The interviews will be broadcast live on NASA Television
To arrange an interview, reporters should contact producer Jeremiah Maddix at 281-483-8631 or 281-414-6995 or by e-mail at jeremiah m maddix@nasa gov by 2 p m on Monday, Dec 13 Video b-roll from Walker and Wheelock's mission will air Dec 14 from 4:30 to 5 a m on NASA TV
Wheelock, Walker and their crewmate, Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 15 During the mission, Wheelock served as commander of Expedition 25 and supported three unplanned spacewalks to replace a faulty pump module Walker served as a flight engineer for Expedition 25 and was co-pilot of the Soyuz during its launch and landing The trio spent 163 days in space and landed in Kazakhstan on Nov 25
During their mission, the crew members worked on more than 120 microgravity experiments in human research, biology and biotechnology, physical and materials sciences, technology development, and Earth and space sciences The crew also celebrated the station's 10th anniversary of continuous habitation, work and research by international crews on Nov 2
Wheelock is from Windsor, N Y He has degrees from the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Georgia Institute of Technology He also served as a mission specialist on shuttle mission STS-120 in 2007
Walker is Houston's only native astronaut and holds multiple degrees from Rice University

ASTRONAUT ALAN POINDEXTER LEAVES NASA
HOUSTON -- Veteran NASA astronaut Alan Poindexter has left the agency to return to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif Poindexter, a U S Navy captain, earned a Master of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the school in 1995 He will return to serve as the dean of students and executive director of programs
"Dex was a well-respected leader within our office," said Peggy Whitson, chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA's Johnson Space enter in Houston "We will miss him being part of our team and wish him the best in his new role as he continues his service to the Navy and the country "
A veteran of two spaceflights, Poindexter logged more than 669 hours in space In 2008, he was the pilot on the STS-122 space shuttle mission to deliver and install the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory to the International Space Station In 2010, he was the commander for STS-131, a resupply mission to the station that delivered more than 13,000 pounds of hardware and equipment
He was selected as an astronaut candidate in June 1998 and served in the Astronaut Office Shuttle Operations Branch as the lead support astronaut at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida He also served as a spacecraft communicator, or capcom, for several missions

NASA AWARDS SPACE STATION CARGO MISSION SERVICES CONTRACT
WASHINGTON -- NASA has awarded a contract with a potential value of $171 million to Lockheed Martin Corp of Gaithersburg, Md , for support of International Space Station cargo mission services
The contract will support planning, coordination, preparation and packing of standardized containers for cargo missions to the station by international partner and commercial cargo vehicles Lockheed Martin will process flight crew equipment including clothing and personal hygiene items, housekeeping items, audio and video equipment, laptop computers, batteries and crew survival equipment The contract also includes provisions to support similar services for future vehicles to the station
A three-month phase-in period and the three-year basic period of the cost-plus-award-fee contract have a total estimated value of $85 million The contract phase-in period begins Jan 1, 2011 The basic period extends from April 1, 2011, through March 31, 2014 Exercising four one-year extension options worth a total of $86 million would bring the contract value to $171 million
Work on the contract will be performed at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and other Texas locations Major Texas subcontractors include Bastion Technologies and Dittmar Associates, both of Houston; GHG Corp of Webster; LZ Technology in Alvin; Rothe Enterprises in San Antonio; and the University of Texas at El Paso
