NASA LAUNCHES SPACE WEEK TEXAS 2011

HOUSTON -- On March 31, NASA takes over the Texas Capitol for "Space Day at the Capitol " It's a space exploration celebration as big as the Lone Star State featuring out-of-this-world space exhibits, educational presentations for students, astronaut appearances, legislative proclamations and the rare chance to touch a piece of an almost 4-billion-year-old moon rock

Activities at the Capitol include: -- 7 a m to 8:45 a m - media interviews with astronaut Doug Wheelock -- 8 a m to 4 p m - free interactive NASA Driven to Explore mobile exhibit along Colorado Street -- 9 a m to 4 p m - educational presentations for registered students on the Capitol lawn -- 1:30 p m to 2:30 p m - astronaut autograph sessions in the basement rotunda -- Space proclamations will be read in the Texas House of Representatives and Senate

MASSACHUSETTS STUDENTS CALL SPACE STATION ASTRONAUT

WASHINGTON -- Students in Springfield, Mass , will make a special call to Expedition 27 Flight Engineer and western Massachusetts resident Cady Coleman aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday, March 29

The event, which includes a video link with Coleman, will air live on NASA Television at 11:41 a m EDT Sixth-grade students from Elmer J McMahon School, Dr Marcella R Kelly School and STEM Middle Academy will participate and learn about the important role the station plays in scientific discovery and space exploration

The downlink will be hosted at Springfield Technical Community College, located at One Armory Square, Springfield, Mass Journalists interested in attending the event should contact Setta McCabe at 413-755-4475

The morning of the event, students will take part in activities focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) led by graduate students from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst

The in-flight education downlink is part of a series with educational organizations in the U S and abroad to improve teaching and learning in STEM subjects It is an integral component of Teaching From Space, a NASA education program that promotes learning opportunities and builds partnerships with the education community using the unique environment of space and NASA's human spaceflight program
