NASA ASTRONAUT TO DISCUSS SPACE EXPLORATION AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

HOUSTON � NASA astronaut and New York native Mike Massimino will return to his alma mater Columbia University June 2 as part of the Dean�s Day Public Intellectual Lectures

The joint presentation with Janna Levin, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Columbia�s Barnard College, entitled �Why Explore Space?� will begin at 10:30 a m EDT in the Davis Auditorium at the Schapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research on Columbia�s Morningside Heights campus at Broadway and 116th Street in Manhattan, N Y

During the presentation, Massimino and Levin will discuss various aspects of space exploration from the most practical to the unimaginable The presentation is open to Columbia alumni and their guests Media are invited to attend

Massimino is a 1984 graduate of Columbia University where he received a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received three master�s degrees and a doctorate

In 1996, Massimino was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA The two-time spaceflight veteran has logged 571 hours and 47 minutes in space and accumulated 30 hours and 4 minutes during four spacewalks

HOUSTON � NASA astronaut Michael Barratt, a veteran of a long-duration mission to the International Space Station and the last mission of space shuttle Discovery, will be the featured speaker at the Sea-Pac Northwest Amateur Radio Convention banquet on June 2

Sea-Pac members from five northwestern states will hear a motivational keynote address titled �Living in the Ultimate Ham Platform � During his presentation, Barratt (handle KDMIJ) will discuss his most recent spaceflight mission, living aboard the station and the use of ham radio on the orbiting laboratory The presentation begins at 8:30 p m PDT at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center at 415 First Ave in Seaside, Ore

NASA ASTRONAUT TO LEAD HOMETOWN SHRINER PARADE

HOUSTON--NASA astronaut Sandy Magnus, who flew aboard the final space shuttle mission, will serve as the grand marshal of the annual Shriner Parade in Belleville, Ill , on June 1 The parade begins at 7:30 p m CDT at the corner of 17th and West Main Street The route will travel eastward through downtown Belleville and end at 9th and East Main Street

Nearly 20,000 people are expected to line the parade route to watch one of Southern Illinois� largest parades, which will feature floats, marching bands and Shiner mini-cars and cycles This year�s parade celebrates the Ainad Shriners� centennial anniversary Founded in 1912, the Masonic fraternal organization is celebrating 100 years of service to the Southern Illinois community

Magnus, a native of Belleville, graduated from Belleville West High School in 1982 She holds a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) and a doctorate from the School of Material Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology

Magnus was selected as an astronaut in 1996 and has logged three spaceflight missions The first mission, STS-112 aboard space shuttle Atlantis in 2002, lasted 10 days The second, STS-126 aboard Endeavour, took her to the International Space Station, where she spent 4 5 months in space in 2008-09 During her third flight, STS-135, she returned to the station aboard Atlantis in July 2011 to deliver supplies and spare parts STS-135, which lasted 12 days, was the final mission of NASA�s Space Shuttle Program
