Dr. Andrew Jenks will be presenting a talk entitled: “Hot Tubs, Hippies, and Space Cadets.” It explores the unexpected connections between the counter-culture of the 1960s
and 1970s, on both sides of the Cold War divide, and visions of space exploration as way of uniting human beings on earth.
Dr. Andrew Jenks, a Professor of History at California State University, Long Beach, received his Ph.D. in history from Stanford University, his BA from Bucknell University,
and his MA from the University of Michigan. He is the author of three books:
Russia in a Box: Art and Identity in an Age of Revolution; Perils of Progress: Environmental Disasters in the 20th Century; and
The Cosmonaut Who Couldn’t Stop Smiling: The Life and Legend of Yuri Gagarin. He is currently working on a history of collaboration in space and its linkage to transnational identities and peace movements.
