The following statement is issued as an addendum to the previous RapidScat
announcement on behalf of the RapidScat Project.
"We
recently began releasing RapidScat wind data to the scientific community
after a two-week hiatus due to an instrument anomaly. Our initial evaluation
of the current RapidScat wind fields is positive. The accuracy of the winds
was similar to that of pre anomaly fields except for low wind speed regions.
Because of this positive result, we have begun a preliminary release of the
data so scientists can access new RapidScat data in a timely manner. The data
are provided for evaluation purposes and to aid in the calibration and
validation of the data. However, we want to stress that calibration
activities are continuing. We are still addressing concerns with the rain
flagging and refining the calibration. We are also monitoring the data to
make sure it is stable and that we see no anomalous trends. Users should be
aware, that the data will likely be reprocessed in the near
future. We expect to do a full reprocessing of the RapidScat
wind data by Feb 28, 2016, but may reprocess earlier if we notice substantial
problems in the current version."
