On 17 January 2025, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone assumed the role of Chair of the NATO Military Committee, officially receiving the gavel from his predecessor, Admiral Rob Bauer, during a special session of the Military Committee. Prior to the session, Admiral Bauer laid a wreath at the Danish Memorial Stone, which honours those who have fallen in the service of the Alliance.

On 15-16 January 2025, the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session took place at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. Thirty-two Allied Chiefs of Defence together with their military counterparts from 27 partners discussed NATOâs vigilance and deterrence, strengthening military partnerships, and continued support to Ukraine. The two-day session was finalised by the NATO-Ukraine Council with the Ukrainian Chief of Defence.

The meeting of Chiefs of Defence focused on further strengthening deterrence and defence of the Alliance, strengthening NATOâs partnerships around the world as well as supporting Ukraine in its resistance against Russiaâs unprovoked aggression. Across both days, Allied Chiefs of Defence met with Military Authorities from NATO partner countries to discuss how to best tackle pervasive instability around the globe together.

The Deputy Secretary General stressed the importance of policy planning in a world of strategic competition, pervasive instability and recurrent shocks.

He gave an overview of NATO priorities, including defence spending and production, and support to Ukraine and answered questions from Members of the European Parliament.â

In her first major public engagement as NATO Deputy Secretary General, Radmila Shekerinska praised Sweden for its increased defence spending, leading defence industry and strong support to Ukraine. Speaking at the annual Folk och Försvar conference in Sälen on 13 January 2025, the Deputy Secretary General also highlighted the changed security landscape following Russiaâs full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
