On 5 March 2026, the North Atlantic Council met in Ambassadorial format for an update on the security environment, in light of Iranâs continued and indiscriminate attacks across the Middle East and beyond. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte chaired the proceedings. NATO Allies strongly condemned Iranâs targeting of Türkiye the day before and expressed their full solidarity with Ankara.

During her visit, Ms Shekerinska met Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sato Kei, Minister of Defence Koizumi Shinjiro, Vice-Minister of Defense for International Affairs Kano Koji, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kunimitsu Ayano, and State Minister of Economic, Trade and Industry Ino Toshiro.

A NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft flew its first mission in Finnish airspace this week, strengthening Allied integration and surveillance capabilities and showing continuous presence in the High North and along the eastern flank.
