On 16 September 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited the United Kingdom and met with Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The leaders visited Harwell Science and Innovation campus in Didcot, where they met with defence sector representatives, apprentices and staff. Mr Rutte highlighted the âsocietal dividendâ produced by defence investment - jobs and economic growth. He praised the United Kingdom for its innovative technologies, defence industry, and world-class universities. He thanked the UK for its role as a leading force within NATO.

As hybrid attacks on our societies, infrastructure and digital networks occur more frequently, Allies are stepping up their resilience efforts. At the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, Allies agreed to account for up to 1.5% of GDP on defence- and security-related spending, including to boost civil preparedness and resilience. Resilience ensures that critical civilian services such as energy, food, water and healthcare remain available to support our societies and military at all times.
