HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4235 PERIOD COVERED: UT November 06, 2006 (DOY 310) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/HRC/WFC 10733 CCD Hot Pixel Annealing Hot pixel annealing will continue to be performed once every 4 weeks. The CCD TECs will be turned off and heaters will be activated to bring the detector temperatures to about +20C. This state will be held for approximately 6 hours, after which the heaters are turned off, the TECs turned on, and the CCDs return ...Continue Reading

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4233 PERIOD COVERED: UT November 02, 2006 (DOY 306) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/HRC 10556 Neutral Gas at Redshift z=0.5 Damped Lyman-alpha systems {DLAs} are used to track the bulk of the neutral hydrogen gas in the Universe. Prior to HST UV spectroscopy, they could only be studied from the ground at redshifts z>1.65. However, HST has now permitted us to discover 41 DLAs at z If you're still having trouble, please contact ...Continue Reading

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4231 PERIOD COVERED: UT October 31, 2006 (DOY 304) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/HRC 10556 Neutral Gas at Redshift z=0.5 Damped Lyman-alpha systems {DLAs} are used to track the bulk of the neutral hydrogen gas in the Universe. Prior to HST UV spectroscopy, they could only be studied from the ground at redshifts z>1.65. However, HST has now permitted us to discover 41 DLAs at z 1. Our program exploits both of these unique cap ...Continue Reading

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4230 PERIOD COVERED: UT October 30, 2006 (DOY 303) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/HRC 10738 Earth Flats Sky flats will be obtained by observing the bright Earth with the HRC and WFC. These observations will be used to verify the accuracy of the flats currently in the pipeline and to monitor any changes. Weekly coronagraphic monitoring is required to assess the changing position of the spots. ACS/HRC 10833 Host Galaxies of Reverb ...Continue Reading

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4228 PERIOD COVERED: UT October 26, 2006 (DOY 299) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/WFC 10551 Gamma-Ray Bursts from Start to Finish: A Legacy Approach The progenitors of long-duration GRBs are now known to be massive stars. This result lends credence to the collapsar model, where a rotating massive star ends its life leaving a black hole or a highly magnetized neutron star, and confirms its essential aspects. The focus of attention ...Continue Reading

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science DAILY REPORT # 4226 PERIOD COVERED: UT October 24, 2006 (DOY 297) OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED ACS/HRC 10851 Solving the Riddle of the Red Rectangle: Proper Motion Study of a Bipolar Nebula around a Binary We propose to use ACS to obtain second-epoch, high spatial-resolution images of the nearest Pre-Planetary nebula, the Red Rectangle {RR}. The RR is a Rosetta Stone for testing our understanding of binarity in the evolution of AGB stars to bipol ...Continue Reading
