[PO.DAAC Mailing List] Addendum to “RapidScat Reduced Echo Power Anomaly and L2B Data Disruption"

September 5th 2015 PDT

September 5, 2015 The following statement is issued as an addendum to the previous RapidScat announcement on behalf of the RapidScat Project. "We recently began releasing RapidScat wind data to the scientific community after a two-week hiatus due to an instrument anomaly. Our initial evaluation of the current RapidScat wind fields is positive. The accuracy of the winds was similar to that of pre anomaly fields except for low wind speed regions. Because of this pos ...Continue Reading

[PO.DAAC Mailing List] RapidScat Reduced Echo Power Anomaly and L2B Data Disruption

September 2nd 2015 PDT

September 2, 2015 Starting on 15 August 2015 (orbital rev 5064) and continuing to present day, there has been an anomalous drop in the echo power signal in the receiver of approximately 20 dB, which initially took place at 03:01:59 UTC. Both noise and signal power dropped but not by equal amounts. The Signal to Noise Ratio dropped by 10 dB. Corresponding with this drop in power was an increase of approximately 0.20 mA in current in the Scatterometer Electronics Subsystem ...Continue Reading
