NATO Response Force passes its last
test |

With the conclusion
of the active phase of Exercise Steadfast Jaguar on 28 June, the
NATO Response Force (NRF) passed its last test before it is due to
become fully operational in October.

NGOs operating in Afghanistan visit NATO
|
|
Representatives of Afghan and
international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in
southern Afghanistan visited NATO Headquarters and the Joint Force
Command in Brunssum, on 26 and 27 June. The group held briefings on
Afghanistan-related issues with diplomats from Allied countries and
NATO staff, including NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

Since the NATO
Training Mission in Iraq began in 2004, member nations have not only
provided military trainers and advisors, but have also generously
donated equipment to the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF).

NATO Partnership Running Festival gets off to
a fast start |

The first
NATO Partnership Running Festival took place on 25 June between the
Serbian town of Kanjiza-Horgos and Szeged in Hungary. Held under the
patronage of NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the
half-marathon Partnership Run was the first event of its kind.

Science for Peace and Security |

On 28 June 2006,
the North Atlantic Council approved the establishment of a new
Committee on Science for Peace and Security (SPS).

Science Committee Meets in Kazakhstan |

NATO’s Science
Committee (SCOM) held its summer meeting in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on
19 June 2006. The meeting followed an invitation from the Kazakh
government and kicked off a week of NATO-related events in the
country.

NATO Week in Azerbaijan |

Azerbaijan will host the fourth
“NATO Week†in Baku from 3 to 8 July 2006. In this framework, a
series of special events, aimed raising public awareness of NATO
policies and structures and reaching out to the civil society, will
be organised with the support of NATO Public Diplomacy Division and
the Government of Azerbaijan.

A series
of youth seminars, scientific workshops, essay competitions and
high-level roundtables and press conferences, described as ‘NATO
Week’, took place in Kazakstan from 18 to 22 June 2006, starting in
Almaty and ending in Astana.

Seminar in Stavanger focuses on
transformation |
|
US Air Force
General Lance L. Smith, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation
(SACT), hosted a press conference in Stavanger, Norway, on 21 June,
following this year’s SACT Seminar. The one-and-a-half day seminar
devoted to “Delivering Transformationâ€Â, brought together NATO’s
senior leadership to guide transformational thinking. Also in
attendance were Norwegian Minister of Defence Anne-Grete
Strom-Erichsen and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
