NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO VISIT LATVIA

 

The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will visit Latvia on Friday, 14 July 2006. The main purpose of the visit will be to discuss with the Latvian authorities preparations for the Alliance summit meeting in Riga on 28-29 November 2006.

 

NATO Secretary General will visit the summit sites and hold talks with Latvian leaders. He will meet the President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis, Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks, Defence Minister Atis Slakteris and the Head of the Summit Task Force Edgars Rinkevics.

 

Mr. de Hoop Scheffer will also address the Young Leaders Forum “Building Bridges for the Next Generation” in Riga.  His speech will be followed by a debate with the participants.

 

In addition,  the Secretary General will travel to Cesis to attend the event marking the 800^th anniversary of the city.
