Earlier today, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld underwent successful surgery to correct an athletic injury to his left rotator cuff.

The routine arthroscopic surgery was conducted by an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon on staff at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The surgery, which has been scheduled for several weeks, was performed in less than two hours.
