NATO boosts efforts in Afghanistan

Meeting in Riga at the highest political level, NATO Heads of State and Government strengthened their commitment to NATO’s Afghanistan mission, but also called for broader international engagement.
NATO Response Force declared fully operational
At the Summit meeting in Riga, 29 November, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer announced that NATO’s cutting-edge Response Force is at full operational capability.
NATO sets priorities for new capabilities for next 15 years
Meeting in Riga, NATO Heads of State and Government endorsed the Comprehensive Political Guidance, a major policy document that sets out the priorities for all Alliance capability issues, planning disciplines and intelligence for the next 10 to 15 years.
New countries could be invited to join NATO in 2008
At the Riga Summit, NATO Heads of State and Government declared that the Alliance intends to extend further invitations to countries that meet NATO standards to join NATO at the next Summit, in 2008.
Alliance offers partnership to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia and Montenegro
The NATO Secretary General announced at the Riga Summit that the Alliance has agreed to offer the Partnership for Peace programme to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia.
NATO launches training initiative for Mediterranean and Middle East
At the second day of the Riga Summit, NATO leaders launched a Training Cooperation Initiative offering to share NATO training expertise with partners in the Mediterranean and in the broader region of the Middle East.

NATO on track for 2010 theatre missile defence

C17 airlift capability for NATO displayed
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the President of Latvia, Vaira VÄ«Ä·e-Freiberga, and senior Alliance military officials attended a display of C17 airlift capability in Riga on 27 November.
