NATO PA PRESIDENT WELCOMES AHTISAARIÂ’S PLAN PRESENTATION
Bert Koenders, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, welcomes the
presentation today in Belgrade and Pristina by UN Special Envoy Martti
Ahtisaari of his proposal for the resolution of the status of
Kosovo.
The President of the NATO PA believes that the proposalÂ’s constitutional,
economic and security provisions are truly aimed at contributing to the
development of a multi-ethnic, democratic and prosperous
Kosovo.
Mr Koenders fully supports the UN-led process to resolve KosovoÂ’s future
status and welcomes the fact that, according to Mr AhtisaariÂ’s plan, NATO
will continue to lead the international military presence providing a
safe and secure environment throughout Kosovo. This important role of
NATO requires the urgent attention of the Member
States. Mr. Koenders also welcomes
the idea of appointing an International Civil Representative,
double-hatted as the EU Special Representative, and sending a ESDP
mission which will monitor, mentor and advise on all areas related to the
rule of law. He strongly encourages close NATO-EU cooperation on this
issue.
Throughout the years, the NATO PA has developed very good working
relations with both Serbian and Kosovar parliamentary institutions, and
Mr Koenders is very willing to offer the good services of the Assembly to
promote the dialogue and compromise needed to resolve this important
question.
