North Atlantic Council visit to Afghanistan

The North Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest level decision-making body, is currently visiting Afghanistan. The Alliance’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General John Craddock, and the Chairman of the Military Committee, General Ray Henault, are accompanying the Council.

During the visit, from 16 to 18 April 2007, the Council – led by the Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Alessandro Minuto Rizzo - will hold meetings with President Karzai and other key members of the Afghan Government, as well as with international community representatives from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, the European Union, G-8 lead nations and NGOs.

The Council will meet with the Commander of NATO’s ISAF mission, General Dan McNeill, and with NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Daan Everts. It will also travel to various NATO-led Provincial Reconstruction Teams.

Finally, the Council will hold discussions with several Afghan Parliamentary Committees on matters such as security sector reform, border security, refugees, the rule of law, counter narcotics, the media and education, and human and women’s rights.
