DoD September 11th Events

The Department of Defense will host a number of events within the National Capital Region to help commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Media will have several opportunites to cover DoD events Sept 7 through 11 as outlined:

Friday, Sept. 7: 10 A.M. TO NOON - PENTAGON MEMORIAL SITE TOURS
The construction site of the Pentagon Memorial will be open as family members of the victims take a tour. Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England will make remarks at the Sept. 11 Memorial Site at 11:15 a.m. Media are invited to photograph this stage of the construction and speak with family members and memorial fund representatives. Media will first pass through security screening in the South Pentagon Parking Lot. Parking will be available in a media lot at the South Pentagon Parking Lot. Media should contact DoD Public Affairs at (703) 697-5131 for access.
Saturday, Sept. 8: 10 A.M. TO NOON -AMERICA'S HEROES MEMORIAL AND CHAPEL TOUR
The Pentagon Tour Office will conduct tours of the America's Heroes Memorial and Pentagon Chapel on the first floor of Corridor 4. Tours are open to the public on a first come-first served basis. Tours will begin and end at the Memorial Gate adjacent to the South Parking Lot. Media are encouraged to attend. All bags will be subject to search

Sunday, Sept. 9: 9 A.M., AMERICA SUPPORTS YOU FREEDOM WALK
Thousands of people will gather in Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2007 National America Supports You Freedom Walk to commemorate the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and to honor veterans past and present. The Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at
the Lincoln Memorial and proceed across Memorial Bridge to the Pentagon South Parking lot and future home of the Pentagon Memorial. The Harlem Gospel Choir will perform a live, 40-minute musical tribute with the U.S. Army Field Band's Jazz Ambassadors.
Media wishing to participate in the walk must check-in at the press table at the Lincoln Memorial to secure credentials. There will be three media sites for photo opportunities along the secure walk route. Golf carts will be available to shuttle media along the route ahead of the Walk. Media may be dropped off at photo opportunities along the route but must return to the golf carts ahead of the Walk. Media that do not return to a golf cart for further transportation, must walk to the Pentagon or back to the Lincoln Memorial at the conclusion of the walk.

WHERE: Media entrance to the Lincoln Memorial site located at the Henry
Bacon Ball Field, located at 23rd St. and Constitution Ave.
*Satellite trucks should park on Daniel French Drive located off Independence Ave. SW next to the Korean War Memorial. Site will be available to satellite trucks beginning at 3:30 a.m. Set up must be fully in place before the 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. security sweep.
Opportunity 2: (Rotary Circle)

WHAT: Photo opportunity to capture walkers cresting Memorial Bridge
WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 9; if media choose not to take golf carts from
Lincoln Memorial site they should be in position at Rotary circle by

* Satellite trucks may be parked at the rotary circle on Sunday, Sept. 9 from 6 a.m.-7a.m.
Opportunity 3: (Pentagon South Parking)
WHO: The world famous Harlem Gospel Choir and U.S. Army

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 9; if media choose not to take shuttle from
Lincoln Memorial site they should be in position by 9 a.m.*
WHERE: Pentagon South Parking
* Satellite trucks may be parked at the Pentagon on Sunday, Sept. 9 from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Media entrance is at Rows 11 and 14. Media vehicle and satellite truck parking in Rows 10-15.
Tuesday, Sept. 11: ALL DAY. PENTAGON SEPT. 11 MEMORIAL OBSERVANCE
Tuesday marks the sixth Anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon. All media who wish to attend must pre-register no later than Monday, Sept. 10 at noon. Some aspects of the ceremony may have to be pooled. The memorial site will not be open to the media before or after the ceremony.

MEDIA SITE 1: Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will host the Pentagon Sept. 11 Memorial observance for family members of those who perished in the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon. The Memorial observance will be open for interested media to cover. Live shots will not be available at the ceremony site prior to the 9:30 a.m. ceremony.

MEDIA SITE 2: Limited space is available at the NEX (formerly Citgo) gas station between the Pentagon and Navy Annex. Media can station themselves to use the Pentagon as a backdrop for live shots. Media should contact Navy Public Affairs at (703) 697-5342 for access.

MEDIA SITE 3: Pentagon South Parking Lot Row 1. Media may position satellite trucks and conduct stand-ups in the South Pentagon Parking Lot utilizing the Pentagon as a backdrop.
