NATO PARLIAMENTARIANS TO MEET NAC, EU AND NATO
TOP OFFICIALS IN BRUSSELS

 

 

 

More than 100 members of parliament from all 26 NATO member countries will be in Brussels from 17‑19 February to discuss the Alliance’s current agenda and other political and security issues in high level meetings with NATO and European Union civilian and military officials.

 

NATO parliamentarians, including delegations from Canada and the United States, will hold their annual joint meeting with the Permanent Representatives of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) Monday afternoon at NATO headquarters. Assembly President José Lello will also have a private meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

 

On Sunday 17, NATO PA members will be briefed, among others, by Jean-François Bureau, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, and Jamie Shea, NATO Secretary General’s Director of Policy Planning.

 

On Monday 18, General Ray Henault, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, and General Henri Bentégeat, Chairman of the EU Military Committee, will address jointly the group of NATO parliamentarians.

 

In the afternoon, in addition to the meeting with the NAC, a selected number of legislators will hold a brainstorming meeting on how to enhance NATO’s communication strategy towards member countries, chaired by Stefanie Babst, Deputy Assistant Secretary General, Communication Coordination,

 

On Tuesday 19, NATO legislators will be briefed by Eneko Landaburu, European Commission’s Director General for External Relations, and David O’Sullivan, European Commission’s Director General for External Trade.

Background

 

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly, founded in 1955 with a Brussels-based secretariat, brings together 248 national parliamentarians from the 26 NATO countries. In addition, 16 associate delegations from Central and Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Russia; 5 Mediterranean Associate delegations: Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Mauritania and Israel and 6 Parliamentary Observer delegations participate in Assembly activities and meetings.
