Secretary Gates' Remarks after Meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in France

SEC. GATES:  (In progress) -- quick word.  Unfortunately, because I'm late for dinner, I won't have time for any questions.  But I had a very good, very positive meeting with the president.

We discussed, as you might expect, Afghanistan, Iran, a number of other subjects.  It was a very candid, very open meeting.  It really underscored the strong friendship between France and the United States.  We have a common view on many issues, including NATO reform going forward.

So I'm very pleased with my visit here to France.  I think that the meetings with the defense minister, the foreign minister and now the president have really created some further opportunities for cooperation and a clear understanding in those areas where we don't have a complete identity of views.  But we have an open and honest relationship, and I'm very optimistic looking forward.

                Thank you.
