Statement by the Secretary General on the catastrophe in Japan

I am saddened by the terrible earthquake and tsunami that happened earlier this morning in the Pacific. We have all seen the dreadful images as the tsunami made landfall on the coast of Japan. Japan is one of NATO’s global partners and on behalf of NATO Allies I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones, to those who have lost their homes and their livelihoods.
Of course, NATO stands ready to assist, if requested.
