Recently the PO.DAAC made available new GHRSST sea surface temperature datasets in the new GDS2 data format (netCDF4) from the NAVO data provider.  See the announcement here:

The data stream for the GDS1 (netCDF3) NAVO counterparts referenced in the announcement will no longer be produced after 1 Feb 2015.  

Please begin using the GDS2 versions as soon as possible.  The previous GDS1 datasets will always remain accessible at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) at:  http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/ghrsst/accessdata.html
