The PO.DAAC, in collaboration with the Aquarius Project, would like to notify users of the Aquarius data of the following:

The purpose of this notice is to document a coding error that has been found in the application of the Significant Wave Height (SWH) data in the Aquarius Version 3.0 data set.  The SWH was designed to be included in the roughness correction for the V3.0 data set.  The error has the effect of nullifying the SWH contribution to the roughness correction.

The use of SWH in the roughness correction was documented in the following V3.0 release documents:

1.  "Summary of Aquarius V3.0 Algorithm and Processing Changes from V2.0", items 2(b) and 2(c).

2.  "Addendum III to ATBD":
            p. 1, item 3
            p. 4, equation 4, and accompanying text on p. 5
            p. 5, item 2.

The typical size of this contribution to the roughness correction is equivalent to 0.08 PSU, computed as an RMS on a monthly global data product. This is based on a global average and may vary regionally, depending on the amplitude of the SWH. The SWH contribution will be included in the Aquarius Version 4.0 dataset.  Any questions about this announcement should be addressed to:  podaac@podaac.jpl.nasa.gov.
