Press Release
NATO conducts its Annual Crisis Management Exercise (CMX)
CMX 2017 will take place between 4 and 11 October 2017. This is the Alliance’s 21st Crisis Management Exercise (CMX) since 1992.
CMX 2017 is a NATO exercise in which the Alliance will rehearse and test its internal and partner consultation and decision making procedures at the strategic political-military level. It will involve civilian and military staffs in Allied capitals, at NATO Headquarters and in both Strategic Commands. As with previous CMX exercises, CMX 2017 involves no deployed forces.
CMX 2017 will use a fictitious but realistic Article 4 and Article 5 crisis scenario focused on collective defence challenges taking into account the decisions taken at the Warsaw Summit. It will include practising comprehensive responses to a complex civil-military scenario, set in a hybrid environment.
CMX 2017 will also be conducted as part of the implementation of parallel and coordinated exercises by NATO and the EU, the aim of which is to improve the synchronisation of crisis response activities between these two organisations.
As with CMX16, CMX 2017 will include the participation of Finland and Sweden, as partners, alongside Allies in the exercise.
