'TIS THE SEASON FOR STEVE: Last night, a river of hot ionized gas surged through the upper atmosphere above Alaska, creating a luminous arc in the sky that rivaled the nearby Moon. Researchers call the phenomenon "STEVE." Sky watchers around the world have been reporting similar arcs in recent weeks. They are related to auroras, but not the same.
