Trident Juncture 18 is a collective defence (Article 5) exercise, which portrays a threat from a fictional near-peer adversary on the north-eastern flank of the Alliance. It will exercise NATO’s ability to defend and reinforce Allies, including from across the Atlantic. Military historian Erlingur Erlingsson looks at the wider context.
