WHAT ARE GEOMAGNETIC JERKS? In the late 1970s, researchers realized something strange was happening to Earth's magnetic field. From time to time, without any gusts of solar wind to cause it, global magnetic fields would "jerk," suddenly accelerating in one direction or another. A big jerk in 2014/2015 prompted officials to update the World Magnetic Model years ahead of schedule.
