ARCTIC AURORA SURPRISE: Who needs sunspots? Yesterday, the spotless sun sparked an outburst of Arctic auroras right in the middle of Solar Minimum. A crack opened in Earth's magnetic field, exposing our planet's magnetosphere to the solar wind. The resulting display of Northern Lights took forecasters and sky watchers by surprise.
