Abstract:

It's among the most enduring mysteries of the space race: How and why did "Did Static Electricity - And Not Gus Grissom - Blow the Hatch on Liberty Bell 7?"

The hatch blow on Liberty Bell 7, leading to the loss of the spacecraft and almost drowning astronaut Virgil I. “Gus" Grissom? Did Grissom deliberately or accidentally blow the hatch, or did some other technical or procedural deficiency contribute to the failure at the end of the otherwise flawless mission? After 60 years, new research and compelling evidence will be presented to provide what we believe is the most plausible scenario for what exactly happened on July 21, 1961.

Bios:

Andy Saunders is an imaging specialist and author of the upcoming book Apollo Remastered. For the recent 50th anniversaries he has released some of the clearest images to date of Neil Armstrong on the Moon, life onboard Apollo 13, and even found Alan Shepard's 'miles and miles' golf ball on the lunar fairway, half a century after the historic events unfolded.

George Leopold is the author of Calculated Risk: The Supersonic Life and Times of Gus Grissom. He has written about science and technology from Washington D.C. since 1986.

Best,
Brian
