Earl Swift, Across the Airless Wilds: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings

Abstract: In his book, Across the Airless Wilds, Swift argues that while they've dimmed in the shadow cast by Apollo 11, it was the final three Apollo missions that marked the zenith of America's crewed space efforts: the astronauts on Apollos 15, 16, and 17 ventured farther, explored longer, and conducted deeper science than any before them. And they owed their success to a particularly American piece of gear they carried to the moon's surface--a car.

 

Bio: Longtime journalist Earl Swift is the author of eight books, including the critically applauded Across the Airless Wilds and the New York Times best seller Chesapeake Requiem. He is a fellow of Virginia Humanities at the University of Virginia, and lives in the Blue Ridge mountains west of Charlottesville.
