First NATO Military Chiefs of Defence Meeting of 2022 to be held virtually - Revised media advisory

NATO’s highest Military Authority, the Military Committee, will meet virtually on 12-13 January 2022, in Brussels, Belgium. Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the Military Committee, will preside over the sessions, which will be attended by the Allied Chiefs of Defence. They will be supported by General Tod Wolters (Supreme Allied Commander Europe, SACEUR) and General Philippe Lavigne (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, SACT).

The two-day meeting of the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session (MCCS) will enable the Chiefs of Defence to meet and discuss issues of strategic importance to the Alliance. The first day will be dedicated to Military Strategic thinking, with discussions on NATO’s Warfighting Capstone Concept, the future work strands associated with its implementation as well as the progress on the Concept for the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area. The last session of the day will focus on military inputs to the new Strategic Concept.

The NATO Secretary General will open the second day of the bi-annual meeting by providing on overview of the current political context to the 30 Chiefs of Defence. This will be followed by a 360 degree update on the current security situation and a discussion on NATO’s ongoing Deterrence and Defence Posture. The Chiefs of Defence will then meet with their Georgian and Ukrainian counterparts, respectively, to discuss the security situation in their Nations as well as the ongoing progress with defence-related reforms.

NATO will facilitate remote interaction during the press conference. To declare your interest in asking a question to the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, journalists must register via Eventbrite no later than 16:00 (Brussels time) on Tuesday 11 January 2022, at the following link: registration for virtual press conference. Registered journalists will be contacted separately with technical details.

The press conference will be streamed live on the NATO website and the livefeed will be provided to Eurovision.

The video will be available for free download from the NATO Multimedia Portal after the event.

Première réunion 2022 des chefs d’état-major de la défense des pays de l’OTAN, qui se tiendra en ligne - Note aux médias (modifié)

Le Comité militaire, la plus haute autorité militaire de l’OTAN, se réunira les 12 et 13 janvier 2022 à Bruxelles (Belgique). L’amiral Rob Bauer, président du Comité militaire, mènera les réunions, auxquelles participeront les chefs d’état-major de la défense des pays alliés. Il sera secondé par le général Tod Wolters, commandant suprême des forces alliées en Europe (SACEUR), et par le général Philippe Lavigne, commandant suprême allié Transformation (SACT).

La réunion de deux jours du Comité militaire de l’OTAN en session des chefs d’état-major de la défense (MCCS) permet à ces derniers d’examiner des questions d’importance stratégique pour l’Alliance. La première journée sera consacrée à la pensée stratégique militaire, avec des débats sur le concept-cadre de l’OTAN sur la capacité à combattre, les travaux futurs concernant sa mise en œuvre, ainsi que l’avancement du concept de dissuasion et de défense pour la zone euro-atlantique. La dernière réunion de la journée portera sur les contributions militaires au nouveau concept stratégique.

Pour la deuxième journée de ces réunions semestrielles, le secrétaire général de l’OTAN ouvrira les débats en donnant une vue d’ensemble de la situation politique actuelle aux 30 chefs d’état-major de la défense. Son intervention sera suivie d’une mise à jour à 360 degrés sur la situation de sécurité actuelle et d’un débat sur la posture actuelle de l’OTAN en matière de dissuasion et de défense. Les chefs d’état-major de la défense rencontreront ensuite leurs homologues géorgien et ukrainien afin d’examiner la situation de sécurité dans leurs pays respectifs, ainsi que l’avancement des réformes du secteur de la défense.
