R 101550Z MAY 22 MID600051828122U FM COMDT COGARD WASHINGTON DC TO ALCOAST BT UNCLAS ALCOAST 174/22 SSIC 5350 SUBJ: 2022 FEDERAL ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN COUNCIL UNIFORMED SERVICES AWARD WINNER 1. I am honored to announce and congratulate Lieutenant (LT) Maria Villanueva, Sector Delaware Bay Waterways Management Division Chief on her selection as the Coast Guard's 2022 Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) Uniformed Services Award recipient. LT Villanueva's commitment to the Coast Guard's Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is admirable. 2. LT Villanueva is an enthusiastic advocate for fairness, equality, and diversity within the Coast Guard. LT Villanueva served on both local and national diversity inclusion organizations in leadership roles to include the Vice Chair of FORCECOM's Leadership and Diversity Advisory Council and Executive Secretary of the Coast Guard's chapter of FAPAC. The Chapter is unique because it is a nationwide, not regional, chapter. The professional development seminars, virtual conversation sessions, heritage events, and more, that she coordinated were well attended and fostered cultural awareness and understanding of the AAPI community. One of these events was the first of its kind: a joint Women's Leadership Initiative and panel which highlighted three women AAPI Commanding Officers sharing their stories and experiences with the workforce. 3. I commend LT Villanueva for her outstanding contributions, achievements, and exemplary service. FAPAC will recognize awardees at a virtual ceremony during their 37th National Leadership Training Program. 4. Civil Rights awards help maximize the Coast Guard's overall mission effectiveness through recognition of members' accomplishments and contributions to Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity in historically marginalized and minoritized communities and Partnership in Education (PIE) programs.
