Mark your calendars! Thursday, December 15th is the targeted date for launch of the SWOT satellite from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 3:46 AM PST. Live launch coverage can be seen on NASA’s website: https://www.nasa.gov/live For more information about the upcoming Dec. 15th SWOT launch and the mission, see the original NASA Media Advisory.

Jointly developed by NASA and Centre National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA), SWOT will provide valuable data about the world’s oceans and terrestrial surface water like lakes, rivers, and wetlands. For more information about mission objectives and outcomes, see our PO.DAAC SWOT webpage.

PO.DAAC, the premier NASA data center for measurements focused on ocean surface topography, ocean temperature, ocean winds, salinity, gravity, and ocean circulation, will also host and distribute SWOT data. This expands the PO.DAAC archive to not only include SWOT’s ocean-related datasets, but also SWOT’s hydrology datasets as well, opening new frontiers in science for both oceanography and hydrology.

The official SWOT products will be available no earlier than Fall of 2023. Itching to start playing with data? We have ample simulated SWOT data available for your exploration! Visit our SWOT data tutorial page that links directly to PO.DAAC’s GitHub resources in a friendly interface for your data access, transformation and workflow needs.

PO.DAAC Operations will be part of mission critical support activities related to launch support and product delivery. At launch, PO.DAAC will be supporting the SWOT team during their calibration and validation activities, enabling data ingest and archive for ancillary/auxiliary data products and level 0 data products, as well as access to this initial set of data. Once validation of the data products is complete, PO.DAAC will distribute data to the general public and integrate data products into transformation, visualization, and analysis tools.
