Description:
Even though the American Air Service had a relatively limited tenure in World War I, America’s first combat fliers still experienced the psychological distress that accompanied
military service. This presentation explores these understudied human consequences of aerial combat in the war. It further shows how medical officers relied on the era’s definition of masculinity to perceive, diagnose, and treat the mental health issues that
troubled American fliers. Jorden Pitt is a Ph.D. student at Texas Christian University and a NASA-American Historical Association Fellow in Aerospace History.
