Description:
Dr. Michael G. Smith, an aerospace and Russian historian at Purdue University, will share some of the landmark contributions of Dr. Maurice Zucrow to aerospace history. He was
a pioneer rocket engineer at the Aerojet Corporation (1943-1946), helping to design engines for the Northrop Flying Wing, and Corporal and Nike missiles. He wrote the country’s first textbook on jet propulsion and founded its first educational “Rocket Lab”
at Purdue (1948). He became a technical consultant for the projects of the Research and Development Board, was a founder of the American Rocket Society, and was a promoter of civilian R&D with the NACA Lewis Research Center. By retirement in 1966, he was
one of the country’s leading advocates of advanced propulsion systems for interplanetary exploration.
