NASA History Talk:  The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) – a Unusual Story of Utilizing Space

Time/Date/Location:  noon – 1 pm ET, Wednesday 8 November, virtual via MS Teams link (no prior registration necessary)

Contact:  Steve Garber (stephen.j.garber@nasa.gov)

Description:  Craig Gralley tells the fascinating, largely unknown, three-part story of NASA's Rosman Spacecraft Tracking and Data Acquisition Network (STADAN) ground station in rural North Carolina.  After it served its purposes this way, it was transformed into the National Security Agency (NSA)'s Rosman Research Station.  Third, it became the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI).  Along the way, the site and its employees played a key, if largely unsung role, in helping to win the space race and the Cold War.  Now as PARI, the site is engaged in a critically important new mission: student science education.   Former Bell Labs engineer and entrepreneur Don Cline, who transformed the NSA site into PARI, and Craig Gralley, who served in the Intelligence Community for three decades, tell the story of how the site, built by NASA 60 years ago, evolved to meet some key national challenges.
