On 1 October 2024, Mark Rutte took office as the NATO Secretary General. He was welcomed to NATO Headquarters in Brussels by outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, whose term ends after 10 years. Mr Rutte and Mr Stoltenberg laid a wreath during a ceremony at the NATO Memorial to the Fallen.

During his maiden trip as NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte visited Kyiv on 3 October 2024. The Secretary General met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and pledged continued support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
