Fellowships Available for Scholars of Aviation and Space History
The National Air and Space Museum is currently inviting applications for its fellowship program as part of the Smithsonian Institutionâs core mission of increasing and diffusing knowledge.
The Museum offers four fellowships to support scholarship in aerospace history:
- The Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Fellowship are competitive three- to twelve-month
in-residence fellowships for pre- and postdoctoral research in aviation and space history. An annual stipend of $40,000 and a research fund of $2,000 will be awarded for predoctoral candidates. Postdoctoral candidates will be awarded a stipend of $55,000 with
a research fund of $3,000.
- The A. Verville Fellowship is a competitive nine- to twelve-month in-residence fellowship
intended for the analysis of major trends, developments, and accomplishments in the history of aviation or space studies. Publishing experience should demonstrate either a mid-level academic record of accomplishment or proven ability to reliably engage broader
audiences. An annual stipend of $70,000 with a research fund of $5,000 will be awarded for a 12-month fellowship.
- The Charles A. Lindbergh Chair in Aerospace History is a competitive 12-month fellowship
for senior scholars with distinguished records of publication. An annual stipend of $100,000 with a $5,000 research fund will be awarded for a 12-month fellowship. The Lindbergh Chair selection process runs one cycle earlier than for the other withâ¯Applications
due December 15, 2024 for a term that begins in 2026.
Fellows must hold primary residency in the Washington, D.C., area during the duration of the fellowship.
The applicant deadline has been extended this year to December 15.
Notifications will be sent by mid-March.
