A NATO maritime task group is currently operating in waters of the Arctic and High North, reaffirming the Allianceâs commitment to collective security in this increasingly strategic region. NATOâs maritime presence in the region reflects growing international focus on the Arctic, where melting sea ice is opening new shipping lanes and access to natural resources. At the same time, the Alliance is enhancing its maritime domain awareness across the region to understand the environment and increase readiness to respond to contingencies. NATOâs Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) E-3A fleet and its Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport A330 (MRTT) aircraft have demonstrated their ability to perform air-to-air refuelling. In July 2025, after successful test flights, the necessary airworthiness certification for mid-air fuel transfer procedures was obtained. As NATO strengthens its capabilities, this increases the Allianceâs strategic flexibility, interoperability and operational reach.
