Moderate 4.4 quake hits near Tateyama, Tateyama-shi, Chiba, Japan4.4 quake 17 May 10:46 pm (GMT +9) An intermediate magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported late at night near Tateyama, Tateyama-shi, Chiba, Japan. According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022, at 10:46 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 141.4 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tateyama (pop. 50,100) located 37 km from the epicenter, Miura (pop. 51,500) 44 km away, Itō (pop. 71,600) 51 km away, Yokosuka (pop. 429,000) 60 km away, Kamakura (pop. 166,000) 62 km away, Chigasaki (pop. 231,700) 67 km away, Fujisawa (pop. 394,600) 67 km away, Odawara (pop. 203,000) 68 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 76 km away. In Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600, 105 km away), the quake was probably not felt. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
