Abstract: Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA) was invented in the mid 1990's and due to its relatively low density and efficient performance has been the heat shield TPS of choice for a range of missions includ-ing, Stardust, OSIRIS-Rex, Mars Science Laboratry (MSL) and Mars 2020.
