AMSAT Journal Mailing Glitch
The June/July issue of the Journal is now arriving Members with sharp eyes have noticed that while the address is correct, the name, callsign, and membership status are incorrect This was caused by a problem with the printer software They have been very apologetic, and have assured us the problem has been solved There is no need to contact the AMSAT office since they are aware of the issue, and the membership data is correct in their records

NASA Fellowship, Internship, and Scholarship Opportunities for Spring 2014
The NASA One Stop Shopping Initiative, or OSSI, strives to provide students at all institutions of higher education access to a portfolio of internship, fellowship and scholarship opportunities offered by NASA mission directorates and centers
Visit the Office of Education Infrastructure Division LaunchPad to find information on internship, fellowship and scholarship opportunities The site features the OSSI online application for recruiting NASA Interns, Fellows and Scholars, or NIFS This innovative system allows students to search and apply for all types of higher-education NASA internship, fellowship and scholarship opportunities in one location A single application places the student in the applicant pool for consideration by all NASA mentors
Applications for spring 2014 opportunities are due Oct 11, 2013
To find available opportunities and to fill out an OSSI online application for recruiting NIFS, visit https://intern nasa gov
Inquiries about the OSSI should be submitted via https://intern nasa gov/oic/

Hams in Space to Appear at the Joplin Hamfest
The Hams in Space Team of KYØF-Eddy Paul, ACØDX-Jeremy Widner, and KDØHKD-Randy Schulze will be appearing at the Joplin Hamfest at Joplin, Missouri Friday and Saturday, August 23rd and 24th The Hams in Space presentation provides hams with information how to successfully get on the air with FM Amateur Radio Satellites, in most cases with equipment they already possess, or by obtaining a few specialized, inexpensive items While explaining the techniques and procedures, an emphasis of "Keep it Simple" and "Have Fun" is stressed throughout
This Hamfest, sponsored by the Joplin Amateur Radio Club, will be at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, located near Exit 8-B off of Interstate 44 in Joplin This event, which is one of the largest Hamfests in the region, opens its doors at 3:00 PM Friday until 9:00 PM, and from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday
The Hams in Space Classroom presentation will likely occur on Saturday We plan on scheduling one or two "hands on" demonstrations during the Hamfest, weather permitting, and a good pass of SO-50 fitting into the schedule Satellite enthusiasts not attending the Hamfest are encouraged to be on the air to work the new guys trying out satellite work for the first time

OPUSAT CubeSat to Test Lithium-Ion Capacitors
The OPUSAT CubeSat, built by students at the Osaka Prefecture University Small Spacecraft Systems Research Center (SSSRC), will test Lithium-Ion Capacitors in space
Lithium-Ion Capacitors have a high energy density (reportedly 14 Wh/kg) and so could potentially be of use in small satellites such as CubeSats where space and mass are at a premium
OPUSAT will have deployable solar panels and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) The downlink on 437 150 MHz will be CW, 1200 bps AFSK or 9k6 GMSK telemetry
A launch is planned on the JAXA H-2A-202 rocket in Spring 2014 into a 400 km circular 65 deg orbit along with the primary payload Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) There should be a number of other satellites carrying amateur radio payloads on the launch, including: STARS-2 Kagawa University TeikyoSat-3 Teikyo University ShindaiSat Shinshu University INVADER Tama Art University ITF-1 University of Tsukuba

The satellite has attracted the attention of the press Read one Japanese newspaper story in Google English at http://tinyurl com/Nikkan-OPUSAT-130815

NASA Announces Next Opportunity for CubeSat Space Missions
NASA is now accepting proposals for the CubeSat Launch Initiative Proposals must be submitted electronically by 4:30 p m EST Nov 26
From the submissions, NASA will select the best proposals by Feb 7 Developers whose proposals are selected may have the opportunity to see their creations launched as an auxiliary payload on a mission between 2014 and 2017 NASA will not provide funding for the development of the small satellites and selection does not guarantee a launch opportunity
CubeSats are a class of cube-shaped research spacecraft called nanosatellites They are approximately 4 inches long, have a volume of about 1 quart and weigh less than 3 pounds
CubeSat investigations should be consistent with NASA's strategic plan and educational vision and goals The research should address specific aspects of science, exploration, technology development, education or operations
From the first four rounds of the NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative, 89 payloads from 25 U S states made the short list for launch opportunities in 2011 through 2016 Of the selected CubeSats, 12 satellites have already launched Twenty-one Cubesats are scheduled for launch later this year

UK High Altitude Society (UKHAS) Conference, September 7
There are a few tickets still available for the UKHAS conference at the University of Greenwich, London on Saturday, September 7
The UK High Altitude Society (UKHAS) conference attracts those interested in learning about building and flying High Altitude Balloons or in tracking their 434 MHz signals
The conference is open to all, you don't have to have flown a High Altitude Balloon, you'll probably get more out of it as a total beginner as there will be a huge wealth of experience in the room you can speak to
There is an impressive line-up of speakers in addition to which there will be workshops, demonstrations along with assessments and exam for the amateur radio Foundation licence Among the presentations will be one on Narrow Band TV by Phil Heron 2I0VIM
Workshops : Balloon Q&A James Coxon M6JCX Pi Dave Akerman M6RPI Foundation Exam Preparation Phillip Crump M0DNY Knots! Anthony Stirk M0UPU
Demonstrations: Balloon -> ISS APRS Setup James Coxon M6JCX Setting up Receiving Station Anthony Stirk M0UPU
The current itinerary (subject to change!) is at https://docs google com/document/d/1SjENgll8iYXLDli4HJHR1DgjHrHjmpAm1vChTz-bo-M/ edit?usp=sharing
You can get tickets at http://ava upuaut net/store/index php?route=product/category&path=74
James M6JCX and Anthony M0UPU report that the British Amateur Television Club batc tv have kindly agreed to attend to give the conference the AMSAT treatment so for those of you unable to make it we hope to finally stream the conference They will where time permits also take questions from people watching remotely
The conference will start at 0930 and finish 1700, afterwards there will be the traditional pub trip this time into Greenwich
