well the day has come, the greek channels are now encrypted but Cyprus Sat is still on, maybe its fate is undecided or they haven't encrypted it yet...
Posted By: Deanops Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 04:47:PM
Also Alpha has not been encrypted yet

Considering you knew it was on the cards, surely you could have started saving.

I wonder if they will add Antenna or/and ERT...

When I subscribed, I also asked them about those channels.
The operator told me that they currently are bidding for Antenna!

I hope they can get it. I think it is ridiculous that Foxtel has Antenna.
This channel belongs to a *real* ethnic service!

Peter

PS By the way, I had no idea that Alpha also shows the Greek football league... yeah!!!

But lets remember that SELECT TV already have Antenna - Do you think that they wil gve it to UBI too?
Posted By: LAZER Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 09:50:PM
And thats all they have and it isen't Exclusive
Posted By: Deanops Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 09:55:PM
Good point - but do you think Foxtel will allow a lot of didtribution of thier only Greek channel?
Posted By: LAZER Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 09:56:PM
they ( Foxtel ) have no Say in it

cause it isent Exclusive to them either
Posted By: Deanops Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 09:58:PM
Oh - I didn't no that - who has the say in it then?
Posted By: LAZER Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 09:59:PM
World Media International is the Ditributor and Reseller of Ant1 in Australia so i guess its them

And don't forget World Media have there own Arabic Service on PAS8 which competes with UBI
Posted By: Deanops Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 10:03:PM
So could that mean they might not allow UBI to have Antenna? Being their competitors and all?
Posted By: LAZER Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Tue 13 Dec 2005 10:04:PM

UBI are not forced to carry this channel its SIMPLE ENOUGH

UBI either take it with the restrictions Cyprus Govt put on it such as it must remain FTA. Or they don't take it. Any contract they sign will clearly state that.
Posted By: Evagoras Paligaridis Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 14 Dec 2005 06:40:AM
Apsattv, thank you for applying some well needed common sense. The media release from Cyprus Sat states that the channel is to be distributed around Australia FTA on behalf of The Cypriot Government, and whoever wins this contract, whether it is UBI or another company, the service will be provided for a descent and fair profit to the winning tender. If UBI do not want the channel, then they can withdraw from the negotiations right now. From what I know, I do not think the Cypriots care as thay are negotiating with others as well.

The Cyprus Government is willing to pay for costs + profit for this to happen. And it will happen, whether it is with UBI, Globecast (my preferred option), or Select.
Posted By: Evagoras Paligaridis Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 14 Dec 2005 06:45:AM
aaatjs,

The Cyprus Government is willing to pay for costs + profit.

What can I say, we are Greeks and Greeks are not tight arses. Greek Governments invest a lot of monies into their diaspora because they view their diaspora as very important. Can I remind you all that there are only 800,000 people living in Cyprus and over 3,000,000 Cypriots living in the Diaspora.
Posted By: Evagoras Paligaridis Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 14 Dec 2005 06:57:AM
And as was stated by an earlier news release from cyprus, the channel will not be officially launched FTA until May 2006.

Yes this is the problem but you must remember we are dealing with ethnics on these forums. Actually I think 90% of the members that use the Satellite forums are hot blooded Ethnics.

More than happy to pay for such a service. Personally i believe UBI have done a fantastic job getting so many different greek channels!! Unheard of to be able to tune into 6-7 greek channels. Great stuff. Folks are wrapped.

Posted By: ur003127 Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 02:15:AM
Another marketing blunder. Why didnt they start them later and leave them on until the new year?
Then they MAY have had more subscriptions when theres nothing for people to do in Jan/Feb.
Posted By: mixo Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 02:29:AM
the f#$ked up in the first place , they put them on too late, should have been on 1 month before the greek rating season started(in october).

As for encrypting now, sounds silly as well as all the greek stations are in non-rating period leading up to the new year....

In my opinion they should have left it on till the new year to bait everyone well and good.

Dont forget they havent even got the 10 channels the promised yet...

Wish them well anyway , maybe it will take off next year for them...

mixo
Posted By: Evagoras Paligaridis Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 02:47:AM
Might have to rush and get my subscription in. But I will have to purchase a UBI box.

Any ideas where I can get one. They are fairly expensive especially if customers will have to get a new one when UBI change encryption.
Posted By: gavros Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 02:49:AM
my personal position is that mentioned above.

a tarbs box costs around $300 new, which at the current time of year is very hard.

i understand ubi have a business to run, but if they did it late january then people could save after xmas
Posted By: Evagoras Paligaridis Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 02:52:AM
It is bad timing. Might get it late January.
Posted By: mixo Re: Greek Channels Encrypted - Wed 21 Dec 2005 03:32:AM
would not bother till late january, thats when the greek rating season starts again, might save yourself 60 bucks and you never know ubi might put a special on...

mixo
